In 2006 Sheila was invited to go to Cairo to help Michael and Sevinch Deman get their new AVL Jacquard hand loom up and running. With 35 workers, Sevinch and Company hand produced passementerie - fancy tassels and trims - but they wanted to add reproduction antique Jacquard ribbons to their product line. Sheila's job was to analyze antique jacquard ribbons and create weave files for them to use on the new loom. It proved to be quite an amazing trip. See Sheila's article on the Articles Page: New World Technology Meets Old Wolrd Textiles in Cairo.

Bill Fredriksson, Sheila's husband, was able to go with her. On the first day off, Sheila and Bill were able to travel to the Pyramid Complex in Giza. While inside the Great Pyramid, the lights went out but Sheila & Bill continued on to the King's Chamber using Bill's handy "torch." Bill and Sheila found themselves alone in the chamber when all the people had departed. They lay down on their backs on the floor in the center of the room and turned out their light. Bill heard an indescribable sound of the universe. Sheila had a vision of beams of light outlining the edges of the Pyramid. This was followed by still images of all the artisans from the past - the flax harvesters, the flax spinners, the weavers of linen cloth, the stone masons, the architects, and the papyrus makers! It was an amazing experience - read more in Bill's 2006 Egyptian Journal on the Articles Page.

In 2016, Sheila began vividly remembering her 2006 trip as she listened to a book on CD about ficticious adventures set in Egypt at the time of Howard Carter. She was inspired to capture her vision in a three panel tapestry - Pyramid Magic.

<<< "GMO-OMG"

Many of you may be aware that California voters rejected Prop 37 in the fall of 2012. It would have required retailers and food companies to label products made with genetically modified ingredients. Millions of dollars, mostly from outside of California, were poured into campaigns both for and against Prop 37. But the donations that came in weighed heavily in favor of Prop 37's opponents. Companies like Monsanto and The Hershey Company contributed to what was eventually a $44 million windfall for "No on Prop 37," while proponents were only able to raise $7.3 million. Still, despite the lopsided campaign funding power, voting on Prop 37 was relatively close. Prop 37 was able to gain 47 percent of California's vote but sadly lost in the election. As it was going to the ballot in 2012 I decided to weave a tapestry with the GMO theme.

I had taken some pictures in a cornfield in the California Central Valley a few years back. I started with one of the cornfield images & mirrored part of it at the top. I added Mother Nature’s DNA to the bottom of the design in earth colors. Then I added a column up the middle of the design with GMO DNA that is slowly disintegrating as the genetic engineering tampers with Mother Nature. I started moving the circular particles of the GMO DNA off of the helix and out into the cornfield and collecting at the top of the design. After I wove it, I realized that the circles could also represent the spreading of the GMO pollen that is so damaging to Non-GMO crops. The tapestry has received a variety of comments from people seeing flying cranes, to the green algae in Clearlake, to ancient calligraphy and more. It is interesting to have people guess what the design is when I display it at local fairs and festivals. Then I show them the title "GMO-OMG." Maybe I should take the title off and send it to Monsanto to hang in their lobby - it will change their psyche subconsciously! We can always hope.

<<< "Birds of a Feather" started out as a design about the idea that we should have Global Warming through love rather than bad chemistry. I circled our Planet Earth with hearts in tune with Mother Nature and the phases of the moon. Trying to decide what continents to add to the earth, I remembered a drawing I came across a long time ago of the Eagle and the Condor. This configuration and orientation of the continents is from the indigenous people of South America. I had never looked at the continents "upside down" and in the shapes of birds. The idea is that the North American continent - the Eagle - that has guided the Americas with the masculine strategizing mind principles, will be united with the feminine compassionate heart principles of South America - the Condor - bringing together all the people of the Americas in harmony. It would be nice if we could all fly together in peace.

<<< "The Flockettes" came about in 1990 when I wove a tapestry for the owners of Straw into Gold - a textile supply store in Berkeley in trade for some very expensive silk yarn. The business is now called Crystal Palace Yarns in Richmond, CA. I was trying to figure out what to weave for Susan and Andy when a row of dancing sheep popped into my head - just like the Rockettes in New York City's Radio City Music Hall. Of course, I immediately came up the name: The Flockettes. The first series was woven in 1990 and they have been making me and other people smile since then. They are now enjoying traveling through the four seasons: tip-toeing, surfing, dancing and skiing. With my own jacquard hand loom I have now added extra texture to all the areas of the design including creating the look of knitted outfits as well as wavy grasses, flags and clouds; textured flowers and leaves; and steep mountains. I hope they make you smile, too.

Global Healing

I started looking through my old portfolios when I came upon a drawing of mine from about 20 years ago. "Global Healing" seemed like a good title in these hard-hearted times. Woven soon after the death of my older brother Brian, some have seen it as a depiction of his freedom from his frail earthly body. I like it when my subconscious weaves together multiple themes into one design.

It was very satisfying to weave this image thinking of healing the planet. I used lots of colors and weaves available with the technology of a jacquard hand loom. Through changes in weave structures and not in changing colors, the top diagonal band that crosses the yellow sphere become only a "wavelength." You can see the band continue up to the right across the mountain and into the sky. I hope you enjoy viewing the jacquard tapestry as much as I enjoyed weaving it.
